Supporting Regional Growth

Based on the former Abitibi Paper Mill site and surrounding lands, BMI is launching Abitibi Connex: a multimodal land hub advancing regional economic development in the logistics, natural resource, agricultural, and food sectors. Located in Iroquois Falls, a town in the Cochrane District within Ontario’s expansive Clay Belt, Connex will facilitate services extending as far north as Hudson Bay.

Revitalizing a Mill Town

Iroquois Falls, was established in the early 20th century by Frank Anson, the founder of the Abitibi Power and Paper Company.

The town's history, closely tied to the logging and paper industries, largely depended on the mill's success. However, as the paper industry declined, the town faced economic challenges.

Utilizing the industrial infrastructure of the Abitibi Mill, purchased in 2016, BMI is creating a strategic hub to generate jobs which support regional industries, local food systems, and foster regional growth in northern Ontario.
